  • February: Wednesday, 2/20/2008 at 7pm: Introduction To Natural Supplements: Safety, Quality and Effectiveness Issues
    Dottie Harrell, Pharmacist, owner, and practitioner at Nature’s Specialist, between Dublin & Pulaski, educates, recommends, and coordinates natural supplements with conventional medicine for her clients. She will share her knowledge of a total, holistic approach to health and dispel myths and misinformation about natural supplements. Her focus will include providing information about Hair Analysis, diet, and cleansing. She will also answer questions about specific health concerns such as arthritis, menopause, heartburn, GERD and much more.
  • March: Wednesday, 3/19/2008 at 7pm: Germs, Genes, and Your Health ... an Alternative Viewpoint
    Dr. Ken Hicks, Doctor of Chiropractic, owner, and practitioner at Peak Performance Chiropractic in Blacksburg, will share the “rules” that allow us to achieve optimal health while living in peace with germs and genes instead of being at “war” with them. Dr. Hicks will provide the answers to these questions: Are we really victims of our genes? Are germs really what make us sick?
  • April: Wednesday, 4/23/2008 at 7pm: Personalized, Natural Skin Care
    Deborah Henthorn, Licensed Master Esthetician and owner of Adagio Massage Therapy in Blacksburg, will discuss how radiant skin can be achieved through simple, healthy routines. Your skin is a barometer of your overall health. Diminish skin problems (acne, flakiness, sun damage) and learn which ingredients are best for your skin type and condition. Take-home recipes will be available for homemade skincare.
  • May: Wednesday, 5/28/2008 at 7pm: Electromagnetic Radiation: One of Six Interferences to Health
    Doctors of Chiropractic Bruce Deutsch, owner and practitioner at Valley Chiropractic in Dublin, and Gary Collins, owner and practitioner at Collins Chiropractic in Floyd, will entertain you with their humor as they discuss the serious aspects of six interferences to health: structural imbalance; the electromagnetic radiation generated by microwaves, television, computers, and mobile phones; nutritional deficiencies; allergies and sensitivities; negative emotional patterns; and toxicity. They will explain how symptom relief and renewed health can be achieved by detoxification through ionic cleansing, whole food nutrition and supplementation, and treatments which may include many diverse modalities.
  • June: Wednesday, 6/18/2008 at 7pm: Hypnosis & Health: Using the Power of the Mind/Body Connection to Enhance Health & Healing
    Michael McGee, Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Master Hypnotherapist, Adjunct Faculty in the Psychology Dept. at Radford University, owner, and practitioner at Alternatives: Counseling and Hypnotherapy in Blacksburg, will share his knowledge of how hypnosis can be used to improve all aspects of one’s health and how basic hypnotic techniques can be used to increase healthy behaviors and how the mind influences physical well being. He will help us discover the power of the subconscious to change our lives; improve treatment outcomes; reduce pain; eliminate stress; and enhance healing.
  • July: Wednesday, 7/23/2008 at 7pm: Aromatherapy
    Victoria Taylor, Licensed Acupuncturist, and Dawn Terpenny, Registered Dietitian and Certified Aromatherapist, will share their knowledge of aromatherapy and the different ways essential oils can be used as natural medicine.
  • August: Wednesday, 8/20/2008 at 7pm: Watsu: Warm Water Aquatic Bodywork
    Tod Whitehurst and Victoria Stone, Certified Massage Therapists and Teachers at the Blue Ridge School of Massage & Yoga, will share their knowledge of Watsu, a form of warm water hydrotherapy and massage. They will describe how the weightlessness in this form can free vertebrae, improve range of motion in joints, and elongate muscles in ways not possible on land. Watch their DVD demonstration and see how being floated in warm water reduces pain, releases stress, and quiets the mind.
  • September: Wednesday, 9/24/2008 at 7pm: Six Categories of Causes of Declining or Poor Health
    Dr. C. E. Castleberry, Doctor of Chiropractic and Palmer College of Chiropractic Faculty Member for several years, will share his knowledge of the following: the ingestion of poisons; nutritional deficiencies; irregular stimulation patterns; mental and emotional disequilibrium; the failure to educate oneself on the prerequisites of good health; and the failure to utilize appropriate therapeutic interventions in a timely manner. Dr. Castleberry will demonstrate his therapy technique.
  • October: Wednesday, 10/22/2008 at 7pm: Medical Qigong: Energy Work for Healing
    Douglas Lindner has practiced qigong for the past seven years. He has completed a Medical Qigong training course with Dr. Effie Chow and studied at the Tai-Sophia Institute in Laurel, MD, as well as being on the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at VA Tech. Mr. Lindner will discuss the Chow Qigong system including daily exercises, meditation, and daily living practices suitable for all ages. Qigong (Chi Gung) can be loosely translated as “energy work”. Medical qigong, an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is the practice of daily living to connect deeply with the internal power that is here to help you live your life more fully. Qigong allows you to experience the innate healing energy that exists within you to promote your health, improve your relationships, and empower you to achieve your highest aspirations.
  • November: Wednesday, 11/12/2008 at 7pm: Health and Well-Being or Dysfunction and Pain?
    Chris Pohowsky, a Certified Rolfer®, will speak about how our body's adaptive processes respond to our environment, moving us towards health and well-being, or dysfunction and pain. He will explain how Rolfing® can help us move with greater ease, improve our vitality, and enhance our well-being. A Rolfing® demonstration will be made available.
  • December: Wednesday, 12/17/2008 at 7pm: Tai Chi and Longevity Breathing: Relaxing into Health
    Paul Pallante will share how the slow, gentle, movements of Tai Chi and proper breathing can continuously renew your health from the inside out and provide a deep and abiding sense of well being in both your physical body and mind. This interactive talk will include basic information about Tai Chi and Longevity Breathing and how they can aid you in experiencing continuous vitality in your daily life. Paul has been actively teaching in our area for nearly a decade. He is a certified Qigong (Chi Gung) and breathing instructor through world renowned master and author Bruce Frantzis (energyarts.com), and has studied Chinese martial arts under Grandmaster Chi Chung “Simon” Kwong for over 15 years.
